Setting a BIOS Password and a Boot Password for Your Computer

If you want to protect your computer from unauthorized access to the BIOS and prevent changes to its settings, you should set a BIOS password. This guide will help you set a BIOS password and, if supported by your BIOS version, a boot password.

BIOS Password

  1. Enter the BIOS – restart your PC and press Del, F2, F10, or another key (depends on the manufacturer).
  2. Set the password – locate the Security or Password section and set an administrator password (Supervisor Password).
  3. Save changes – choose Save & Exit.

🔐 Why? Without a BIOS password, no one can change hardware settings or boot from a USB drive.

Boot Password

Some BIOS/UEFI versions support a password required to start the system (Boot Password). You can enable it in the same Security section.

Setting a BIOS Password

  1. Once inside the BIOS, use the arrow keys to navigate to the Security or Advanced section (depending on your BIOS version).
  2. Find the Set Supervisor Password or BIOS Setting Password option and press Enter.
  3. Enter your desired password and press Enter.
  4. Confirm the password by typing it again, then press Enter.
  5. Save changes and exit the BIOS by selecting Save and Exit Setup or a similar option.

Setting a Boot Password

If your BIOS version supports setting a boot password:

  1. Return to the Security or Advanced menu.
  2. Find the Password on boot or Boot Password option and select it.
  3. Enter the password that will be required every time the computer starts.
  4. Confirm the password and save changes before exiting the BIOS.

⚠️ Important:

  • If you forget the password, it can usually only be reset by using a jumper on the motherboard or removing the CMOS battery.
  • On laptops, resetting the password may be more difficult and require disassembly.
  • Setting a BIOS password prevents access to BIOS settings but does not block booting from external devices. For complete protection, set a boot password and disable booting from external devices.

💡 Conclusion: BIOS and boot passwords add an extra layer of security but require careful password management.
